‘Head of the River’ thriller!!
The
Head of the River regatta was held at Lake Barrington on Saturday with
students performing very well to win the Junior Co-ed shield and come second
in the Open Co-ed shield.
Madeline O’Connor is to be congratulated on convincingly winning the Open
girls’ single scull event.
The highlights was the Open Eights races at the end of the day, the
culmination of months of hard work by both crews. The girls, coached by
Barry Townsend, came 4th in a hard fought race.
In the boys’ event, Hutchins led all the way until the 1750m mark, when the
boys followed coach Ken Davey’s race plan and put in a massive effort to
draw level and then overtake their southern rival. A very excited crowd of
spectators watched as race favourite, Grammar, followed and both crews
lifted their rating again for the final 100m.
In a heart-stopping finish, the boys dug deep and under the superb guidance
of cox, Alice Tremayne, were drawing away at the end, maintaining their lead
to win by half a boat length. Their extraordinary efforts enabled the
school to win its first Head of the River trophy in ten years. All crews
and coaches are to be congratulated on their efforts on Saturday, at times
in quite adverse conditions.
Mrs
Jane Burbury,
Teacher-in-Charge of Rowing
