Manal Younus, a slam poet came to speak to the Year 6 group on Friday morning performing some of her poems which addressed a range of issues she has experienced throughout her life.
Manal is a two-time Australian Poetry Slam National finalist and spoke honestly about different aspects of life from perseverance, identity, travel and truth.
Manal’s voice has been heard in venues in Australia and the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Georgetown Literary Festival in Penang, Malaysia, and the Adelaide Festival of Ideas.
The students were enthralled with her performance and hung off every word. Her honest discussion about growing us as the only Muslim in her school was extremely powerful and one I hope they will keep close to them throughout their lives.
Manal’s stories about being a refugee, escaping Eritrea (bordering Ethiopia) and the emotions she felt and continues to feel about leaving her family and never being able to return. As our current Integrated Unit is focusing on Migration pathways to Australia, Manal’s visit was timely and well received.
