Year 9 Briggs and Fox Community Service Week

I have had the great pleasure of being part of the Year 9 Briggs and Fox House Community Service Week. The focus of this week has been for our students to develop and understand how they can contribute to the community in which they study, live and play. To be of service to others.

On Monday, we had an engaging session with Bri Good, College Medic and Ambulance Tasmania Paramedic, looking at basic resuscitation and various activities on campus including writing personalised Christmas cards to all the residents at Fred French. On Tuesday, we hosted an Agency Expo Day with first responders, emergency and community services organisations from Launceston showcasing what they do in our community. Organisations included Ambulance Tasmania, Tasmania Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Royal Flying Doctor Service, The Salvation Army, and St Vincent de Paul Society. Our students spent time with each organisation and learnt about what they do and volunteer opportunities.

On Wednesday and Friday, students travelled out to various organisations as part of the Service in Our Community Days, lending a helping hand at the Benevolent Society, The Salvation Army, City Mission, and St Vincent de Paul Society. Sorting donations, making sandwiches, soup and treats for food trucks, preparing a community luncheon and putting together Christmas hampers. A highlight for many students was the conversations with volunteers, learning about the valuable work they do to support people in our community. Students also had the opportunity to lead and create connections with younger students at our Elphin campus.

On Thursday, we travelled to the Valley Campus where we spent the day tidying up the grounds, mulching, and weeding. Many hands make light work, and we were able to accomplish a few weeks’ worth of work in the few hours we were there.

Our students this week have been wonderful ambassadors in our community. I hope they come away from the week with a sense of pride and humility and seek to actively help others in the future.
