On Saturday 26 June, the Scotch Oakburn Senior 1st Football team ventured down to the Twin Ovals in Kingston to play Guilford Young College in what was set to be a challenging fight for the 2021 SATIS shield. The nerves were high but there was an electric feeling amongst the group, coming from a 1-point win against St Patricks College in the semi-final to claim the Northern Premiership.
Harry Bayles (Year 12) with his bag of four goals and Lawson Archer (Year 12) with one in the first half only had us down by one goal going into the main break. Scores were 35-41. The boys were up and chatty, discussing and touching on some important things to try and keep us within grasp of the SATIS premiership.
Guilford Young College kicked six goals in the third, but Will Dakin’s (Year 12) goal kept us within reach. Another two goals from Dakin in the third kept us with a slight chance but Guilford were always one step ahead, running away with the win, 84 to 58. Best players were Canny, Cox, Skipper, Auton, Bayles and Simpson.
Thank you to all who gave up their time to either help out on the day or come down and support the Thistles for their last game of the season, making the Year 12s last game a memorable one.

This weekend will see our Senior Boys Team competing in the Tasmanian Secondary College Basketball Championships at Elphin Sports Centre, Launceston. The boys will be competing against Secondary Colleges from both Hobart and Launceston, unfortunately, there are no Northwest Colleges represented at this tournament.
The first of their matches will see a re-match of the NSATIS Grand Final from earlier this year when they come up against St Patrick’s College. They will certainly be trying to turn the tables leading into their two other pool games against Hobart College and Guilford Young College.
If the boys can secure first or second spot in their pool on Saturday they will progress to the crossovers early on Sunday morning, possibly playing against either Launceston College, Rosny College or Elizabeth College.
The overall winner of this tournament will earn an entry into the Australian Schools Championships being held in Queensland in December. Our Saturday games are listed below and Sunday’s game times will be determined on placings from these results.
It would be great to have as many supporters as possible at our games:
24 July 2021
Venue: Elphin Sports Centre
v St Patrick’s College
v Hobart College
v Guilford Young College
I take this opportunity to thank the team’s Coach, Rick Wyllie, their Team Manager, Catherine Scott, their parents and a dedicated group of our past basketball players who have all helped in their preparation in the lead up to this tournament. We wish them the best of luck for their games and look forward to an exciting weekend of basketball.
