Visit from Master Chess Coach

The first Interschool Chess Tournament of the year will be held on Monday. In preparation for this, we have been fortunate to have expert Chess coach, Carl Gorka, give us some tips. Carl has attended Chess Club at both the Elphin and Penquite campuses over the last two weeks and we have been able to benefit from his expertise. Chess is particularly popular this year and Carl has been busy getting around to as many students as possible!

We are grateful to Carl for assisting us and hope to see him back next term.

Basketball

The Scotch Oakburn College Senior Basketball program capped off a great season when it held its Presentation Evening at the Middle School & HPEC last night with our whole Basketball community being invited this year.

Scotch Oakburn played in the Senior Thirds Girls Grand Final and the Senior Seconds Boys Semi-Final this term, and we only narrowly missed playing in two other Grand Finals, Senior Boys Firsts and Senior Girls Seconds.

Our NSATIS Senior Thirds Girls Navy won their Premiership against Scotch Oakburn Gold, 21 – 8 in what was a very competitive game. The girls were presented with their respective Premiership medallions at the Basketball Presentation Evening along with Macie Petterwood, being awarded the Most Valuable Player Medal for the Grand Final.

Our Senior Seconds Boys Maroon team found their semi-final very tough against St Patrick’s College which saw them be defeated 56 – 38. This young team will certainly be a team to watch for the future.

The Best & Fairest, Runners-Up Best & Fairest and Sportsmanship Awards were also presented for each team last night and we congratulate the following players:

The evening also celebrated and acknowledged the efforts by all of our Year 7 and some of our Year 8 students who participated in our 3×3 Competition during Term 1. For the first time, these students played in their respective Grand Finals and Match Up Grand Finals on the same night as the Presentation Evening and there were definitely some great highlights from those games.

Our Captains also launched an exciting initiative that we are embarking on. This year marks the third annual Rise Above the Rim Shootathon & it will be held on Saturday 20 May, kicking off at 8am Saturday and concluding at 8pm that night at Swisherr Hoops, both here in Launceston and in Hobart.

The Captains have all signed up and hope that others will join them!

We will be coming together for a great cause, shooting hoops all day to raise much needed funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

We are aiming for a combined $10,000 – if we can get 100 of our players to register that is only $100 each to raise!

Come join us and sign up for a great cause! Let’s give back as a Basketball community as together we can make a real difference. We will share this link to join our Scotch Oakburn team on The Dash and our Facebook Group soon: https://www.rmhcvictas.org.au/join/scotchoakburncollege

Last night we also farewelled our Year 12 students who have given so much to Basketball during their time at Scotch Oakburn and we thanked them for their excellent contributions.

We now look forward to the remainder of this year, namely the Basketball Tasmania TCE College Championships in September and the Year 7- 10 High School Tournaments in November, and of course the Northern High Schools Association Competition in Term Four for all Year 7-10 students.

Thank you to all our Team Manager, Trish Reid, our players, our coaches and all parents for your continued support of the Basketball program.
