Friday 6 April saw the 2023 Middle and Senior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival held at St Leonards in excellent conditions. After having our Inter-House Swimming Carnival only three weeks earlier in the term, it was great to see the House spirit and competition in full flight again with great efforts and sportsmanship shown at each event around the track.

This year we had six records broken in the program:

Abbey Berlese, F U/16 Shot Put (3kg) 11.85
Old Record: 11.35 D. Wagner (Dean 2016)

Tom Watters M U/17 Long Jump 5.71
Old Record: 5.49 O. Waldron (Dean 2021)

Tom Watters M U/17 200m 23.97
Old Record: 24.45 O. Waldron (Dean 2021)

Tom Watters M U/17 Javelin (700g) 42.86
Old Record: 36.71 B. Atkins (Briggs 2022)

Tom Watters M U/17 100m 11.70
Old Record: 12.26 H. Lewis (Briggs 2019)

Macie Petterwood F U/14 Shot Put (3kg) 11.33
Old Record: 11.2 R. Brock (Briggs 1986)

A carnival of nearly 300 events in just under six and a half hours does not happen without our staff and volunteers that assist. I would like to thank our Grounds and Maintenance team for setting up and bringing the equipment to St Leonards, our House Heads for organising their teams, Amanda Hardwicke for organising transportation of many students, Michelle Stevenson for the results submission and the hours that go into structuring the carnival, Paul McKendrick, Cale O’Keefe and Kiera Hernandez for coordinating the track and field, and Rachel Buck and Kate Watters for working the photo finish software at the track.

We had a close carnival throughout the day with some excellent participation helping to maximise House points scores.

Lastly, all students are congratulated for their efforts. I hope everyone enjoyed the day and the challenge. All House results, record breakers and age champions will be announced in assembly on Tuesday.
