Penquite and Elphin Chess Club students participated in the first face to face Northern Regional Chess event held since 2019. Scotch Oakburn College hosted this event at the Penquite Campus on Thursday 5 August.
All students demonstrated the College Learner Attributes for the event, especially Self-regulation, Compassion and Courage. A highlight for staff was seeing students also demonstrating a Growth Mindset and the ability to ‘bounce back’ following chess match challenges. This was seen particularly with our Year 2 students whose opposition included Year 6 students! Our Senior School students were wonderful role models for Middle School and Junior School participants, and for other schools that attended the event.
All students are congratulated on their involvement: everyone received a certificate recognising their effort and participation. In addition, we extend our congratulations to our Year 7-12 Chess Club students coming a narrow second in the Secondary Section, while the Scotch Oakburn Primary Teams placed second, third and fourth. A particularly noteworthy performance was by Deigo Munoz Lagos (Year 5), who came equal first in the Primary section. It was a wonderful effort by all!
