SUMMARY:The Whole Brain Child
DESCRIPTION:4 WEEK PROGRAM – EVERY THURSDAY \n  \n\n\n \nGOAL: Community Education and Support  \nScotch Oakburn College is committed to growing community support and engagement through information sharing on specific matter relevant to them\, our students\, and the greater community. To ensure an inter-connectedness and support for each other\, the College will embark on a community education and support program that will extend opportunities for the community to learn and grow.  Opportunities are aligned to the College’s Mission\, Vision and Values. \nThis program also encapsulates the Learning and Wellbeing Strands of SOC2035   \n\n\n\nFULLY BOOKED\n12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind\nYour toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of Coles. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your 11-year-old refuses to join his team on the court and stays on the bench. Do children conspire to make their parents’ lives endlessly challenging? \nNo — it’s just their developing brain calling the shots! \n\nHOW CAN THIS COURSE HELP?\nIn this pioneering\, practical book\, neuropsychiatrist Dr Daniel J. Siegel and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson demystify the meltdowns and aggravation\, explaining the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. The ‘upstairs brain’\, which makes decisions and balances emotions\, is under construction until the mid-20s. And especially in young children\, the right brain and its emotions tend to rule over the logic of the left brain. \nBy applying these discoveries to everyday parenting\, you can turn any outburst\, argument\, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth. With clear explanations\, age-appropriate strategies for dealing with day-to-day struggles\, and illustrations that will help you explain these concepts to your child\, The Whole-Brain Child shows you how to cultivate healthy emotional and intellectual development so that your children can lead balanced\, meaningful\, and connected lives. \nHOW LONG IS THE COURSE?\nOver a period of four weeks\, you’ll learn 12 revolutionary strategies to nurture your child’s developing mind. \nSessions will be 8.45am to 10.30am\, every Thursday for four weeks commencing Thursday 14 October. \nGiven the nature of the program and delivery\, sessions are designed to be smaller\, with up to 12 attendees\, ensuring everyone has a voice. \nIf there is demand\, the College will look at running another session at a later date. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND?\nThe Whole Brain Child has been developed for parents and carers of children aged between 3-12. \nExisting Parents/Guardians of students attending Scotch Oakburn College are welcome to attend. You do not need to have a student in the junior or early years\, the opportunity is open to everyone. \nTo ensure the sessions are highly beneficial\, Parents/Guardians are asked not to bring children. \nFACILITATORS\nFranny Stewart  \nFranny is a registered Psychologist and School Counsellor at the Elphin Campus. She has worked internationally in schools and also across various mental health settings in London\, Melbourne and Launceston. One of Franny’s passions is in working with and supporting parents and she excited to be a part of bringing The Whole Brain Child to the College community. \n  \n  \nJo McFarlane \nJo McFarlane is a Learning Support Teacher at the Elphin Campus. She has extensive experience working with families and children with disabilities. Jo worked in the classroom and in consultative roles before joining the College Community 14 years ago. She has great pleasure working alongside Franny to share the message of Dr Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson with our parent community. \n  \n  \n  \nCOST\nThe four-week program\, The Whole Brain Child\, is $25 per person which includes a copy of the book. Participants should ensure they are able to commit to attending all four sessions before booking. \nTHIS COURSE IF FULLY BOOKED \n

The venue will be in the Middle School and we will confirm the room prior to the first session. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND?\nExisting Parents/Carers/Guardians of students in Years 5 – 8 attending Scotch Oakburn College are welcome to attend. She has been a classroom teacher for nearly twenty years\, teaching both primary students and early adolescents.
