Carl Lewis: African American Olympic legend (myblackhistory.net)
“My thoughts before a big race are usually pretty simple. I tell myself: Get out of the blocks, run your race, stay relaxed. If you run your race, you’ll win… channel your energy. Focus.”
– Carl Lewis (Track and Field Gold Medalist)
Great words from the great Carl Lewis. He won four gold medals in the 1984 Summer Olympics, matching the record set by Jesse Owens. In total, he won nine Olympic gold medals, 10 Olympic medals, and eight gold medals at the World Championships, making him the greatest track & field athlete of all time. He ended his Olympic career by winning the long jump Olympic event four consecutive times.
For those in sporting finals and championships this weekend, may you all focus, channel your energy and run, sail or row your own race, no matter what the competitors are doing. Remember it is your race, and the only competitor is who you were yesterday. Can you do better today?
Our Principal, Mr Andy Muller, addressed a Senior School assembly just recently telling us that it is not about winning. I agree. It is not about winning, it is about becoming the person who can win, and I am sure that you are all on your way to becoming those who do.
All the best with your sporting endeavours this weekend everyone.
