The Year 12 2018 cohort have led the College wonderfully. Their willingness to bear the torch of school spirit, engaging in the full spectrum of College life, not to mention their enthusiasm to engage in projects beyond out gates, epitomises the character of the cohort.

In this way, they have inspired and involved their peers across the College to bring their best to whatever pursuit they are involved in. As a result, we have witnessed the spirit of friendly rivalry in House competitions, great sportsmanship and camaraderie on the sporting field, excellence on the […]

Peace be with you

In the Year 8 Graduation Assembly last week I was given the honour of saying the final words to the students and guests. I thought it appropriate at that stage to pay homage to our Scottish forebears who started both Scotch College and MLC many years ago, with a Scottish Blessing:

If there is righteousness in the heart,
there will be beauty in the character.
If there is beauty in the character,
there will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home,
there will be order in […]

On Tuesday 11 December, Celebration was held at the Albert Hall, Launceston.  It included a wonderful evening of performances from events throughout the year, an opportunity to thank our Year 12 cohort for their time at the College and the announcement of our 2019 student leadership team.

A highlight of the evening was our College choir, made up of students from all year levels and staff.

Thank you to all our performers and participants for a great evening.

Religious Freedom Legislation and Schools

Recently there has been a considerable amount of media coverage regarding how the Religious Freedom Legislation and the Sexual Discrimination Act relate to schools. In reading an article in the Age newspaper this morning it appears that the issue has become a political football whereby each major party is attempting to gain a superior position in relation to the other.

Prompted by Mr Philip Grutzner, Carey Baptist Grammar School, and Mr Jim Laussen, Overnewton Anglican Community College, 46 Principals of faith-based schools across four states […]

Next March a group of Japanese students from Owada Junior High School, Scotch Oakburn College’s Sister School, are coming to our College for a one week home stay.

The group will be arriving on Sunday 17 March and will depart on Sunday 24 March.  During the school day, the students will be mostly undertaking a separate program and occasionally they will accompany their host student to some classes.  We are seeking families willing to host these students.  There is no need for families (or students) to know any Japanese as they will be here to learn English and engage in normal Australian […]

At the picturesque Scotch Oakburn Park, our Middle School cricketers played against St Patricks College in their Year 7 and Year 8 cricket finals last Saturday.

Both sides were successful in very convincing wins. Year 7, coached by senior students Ben Simpson (Year 11) and Sam Spires (Year 12), displayed a wonderful team effort, winning the final by 40 runs. Enthusiasm and sportsmanship was the highlight with the student’s presentation on and off the cricket field being exemplary.

Year 8, coached by Mr John Gaby who incidentally has coached the winning Year 8 teams […]

This week’s WAVE session was a Christmas Chapel service for both Middle and Senior School students. We were very fortunate to have Mr Rohan Pryor from the Uniting Church Presbytery of Tasmania and the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania presiding.

Some of the stories of Jesus from the gospels of Luke and Matthew were read and the Senior Choir sang several well-known Christmas carols. Rohan encouraged the students to listen for the values that sat beneath the old songs and the modern translations of the ancient biblical texts and to compare […]

Bring Your Own Technology at the College

Technology continues to evolve and as such the need for a personalised device is becoming more apparent in education. Students need to have ownership and control over the type of device that they interact with daily as part of their learning. All students (Years 6-12) are required to bring their own technology (BYOT) and students in Year’s 4 and 5 may bring a device if they wish.

I would like to introduce you to our partner, JB HI-FI, where you can access a range of commercial grade Lenovo laptops/tablets and Apple MacBook devices at a discounted price. The other great advantage […]
