Collegian Megan Fettke (’13), is the creative force behind Megan Rose Fashion. Over the past four years she has also returned to the College in the role of a dedicated Learning Support Assistant on the Elphin Campus. She is now moving on for a new and exciting role as the Deputy Head of Wardrobe on the Australian Tour of Grease the Musical. We asked Megan about her journey so far and what the future may hold.

Megan’s connection with Scotch Oakburn College began as a three-year-old Early Learning student. After leaving the College in Year 12, her path led her to Melbourne and a Bachelor of Design, majoring in fashion. She honed her skills, pursuing her passion for seamstress and design work in Melbourne, then found her way back to the College in 2020 in a Learning Support role.

Her passion for helping others is evident when asked about this role. “Helping students discover their potential and watching them grow has been incredibly rewarding and fulfilling work” she said. Keen to harness her creative skills while at the College, Megan particularly enjoyed her time in the art room, working with Art Teacher, Suzanne Creese. “It was a creative outlet and a chance to connect with so many students outside of their usual classroom environment,” Megan explained.

Megan found another creative outlet and chance to connect with students when she stepped into the world of College production costume design. “Being involved in College productions like Shrek the Musical, Fantastic Mr Fox and Seussical the Musical allowed me to merge my passions for education and the arts”, she said. As the sole backstage dresser for Shrek the Musical, she mastered quick changes, turning Fiona into an ogre in just 30 seconds. Megan was also the costume designer for Launceston Musical Society’s Elf the Musical and the Encore Theatre Company’s Chicago and Mama Mia.

Megan’s heart now beats for costume design. “It’s about creating magic”, she said. Whether it’s bringing characters to life through fabric or infusing colour into her designs, Megan’s passion shines through.

Her fashion journey began when her mother, Belinda Fettke, taught her to sew at age eight, igniting a love for sewing and artistic expression. In Year 12, Megan’s Student Directed Inquiry (a TCE subject) was focused on fashion. Her brand Megan Rose Fashion was born, a label that rejects fast fashion in favour of sustainability and quality pieces that stand the test of time.

In completing her degree in 2016, her graduate collection, an all-wool ensemble, clinched the prestigious Woolmark Award. Going on to study at a Paris Masterclass, she was presented the Couture Design Award for her designs and overall contribution, not only to her own designs, but also assisting others to complete their collections.

Megan’s work has graced the pages of Russh magazine and Vogue Australia. Her website showcases original designs, emphasising ethical and sustainable practices. Megan is particularly proud of her upcycled collection under her Megan Rose label – giving a second life to clothing and reducing waste one stitch at a time.

“From op shop tops and tired worn-out pieces, I am turning fashion waste into a sustainable statement with hoodies, sweats, t-shirts and more!

“Every piece in my collection is completely unique and has been hand crafted by me.” Even the fabric scraps that come from creating new garments are recycled into artistic designs, like flowers added to a jacket. Every scrap of fabric has a purpose.

Her most recent project, the “B.Random” collection, is dedicated to a late friend, with proceeds supporting mental health awareness through the “RUOK?” foundation.

“By supporting Megan Rose you’re not just getting awesome, one-of-a kind pieces for your wardrobe”, she said, “you’re making a difference too”.

And now, Megan embarks on an exciting new chapter. She has recently accepted the role of Deputy Head of Wardrobe on the Australian tour of Grease the Musical.

Having started her role learning and taking over the show in Sydney, she and the show are now off to Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane, finishing in February 2025. A new adventure has begun, and we look forward to seeing where it leads.
