CHESS
On Friday 2 September, 24 students competed in the Launceston Interschool Chess Tournament. The tournament was the Secondary Team’s third for the year, the first over the board for both Primary and Secondary teams, and the last before State Finals next Term.
Our Primary Team won convincingly with a team score of 23 out of 28, beating second place by five points. Special mention must be made of Henry Chilcott (Year 5), Grady Frith (Year 6) and Shiv Kataria (Year 6), for winning 6 out of 7 games in a three-way tie for second, and Jasper (Year 3) and Hugo (Year 6) Clifton who won 5 out of 7, tying for fifth. Although the result wasn’t known on the day, we have also discovered that our Secondary Team tied (with Launceston Church Grammar School) for first place, securing a double victory for Scotch Oakburn College. Well done to Addison Djatschenko (Year 12), Harry Lillywhite (Year 9) and Hamish Knowles (Year 12) who won 6 out of 7 games and tied for second, and Mitch Fulton (Year 11) who won 5 out of 7 coming tied in sixth. These individual results will no doubt hold us in good stead when State Finals come.
A great day with many checkmates! I’d also like to acknowledge the commitment of our TCE Chess players, who gave up their TCE Moderation Day in order to compete for the College. Our attention now turns to States where we aim to qualify for the Chess Nationals later this year.
