A deeper experience of school, boarding and belonging 

Approx. 10-12 week school immersion program 

The One Term Study Abroad Program gives students enough time to move beyond first impressions and begin to feel part of the College community. 

Over one school term, students participate in daily school life, develop routines, build friendships and experience the rhythm of learning in an Australian independent school. 

This program is ideal for students who are ready for a more substantial overseas experience but may not yet want to commit to six or twelve months. 

Who is this program for? 

This program is best suited to students who: 

• Want a genuine Australian school experience  
• Are ready to live away from home for one term  
• Want to improve English through daily immersion  
• Are interested in boarding and school community life  
• Want to build independence and resilience  
• May be considering a future semester or year-long program  

English language level 

Students do not need advanced English to apply for the one-term program. As a guide, students should have a good, functional level of English that allows them to understand basic instructions, ask simple questions and take part in school life with support. 

EIKEN Grade 2, Duolingo English Test results, school-based English evidence, or equivalent information may be used to help indicate a student’s readiness. Students with EIKEN Pre-2 or equivalent may also be considered, particularly where they demonstrate a positive attitude, maturity and willingness to communicate. 

A formal English test result is not the main requirement. More important is the student’s attitude, effort, curiosity and willingness to participate in College life. 

During the program, students will be supported to build their English confidence through daily immersion in classes, boarding and College activities. Where appropriate, feedback on English language development may be informed by the Australian Curriculum English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) Learning Progression, helping the College provide a clearer indication of each student’s progress in listening, speaking, reading and writing. 

This approach should be confirmed with relevant learning leaders before being included in final program material. 

What students will experience

Academic experience 

The one term program gives students a real sense of Australian learning. Students are expected to attend classes, participate respectfully and complete appropriate class activities. 

Assessment may be modified depending on the student’s English level and length of stay. The goal is not to place unnecessary pressure on short-term students, but to help them engage, learn and grow. 

Students may receive a brief participation or progress summary at the end of the program, depending on the final program design. 

Accommodation 

Scotch Oakburn College has its Boarding House located on campus, providing a supportive and connected environment for students.  

Boarding provides daily structure and a strong sense of belonging. Students are supported by boarding staff and have opportunities to develop friendships beyond the classroom. 

Boarding life includes: 

• Shared meals

• Support from residential staff  
• Friendships with Australian and international students  

Where students require accommodation during term breaks, the College may support a suitable homestay arrangement, subject to availability and appropriateness.

Two Term academic and cultural immersion program 

The Six-Month Study Abroad Program is designed for students who want a more complete international learning experience. 

Over two school terms, students have time to settle, build friendships, understand class expectations and participate more deeply in the life of the College. This is a strong option for Japanese students who want a significant overseas experience while still maintaining connection with their home school pathway. 

Six months allows students to move from “visiting” to genuinely participating. 

Who is this program for?

Academic experience 

Students in the six-month program are expected to engage seriously with their learning. They will attend classes, complete appropriate tasks and participate in classroom activities. 

Depending on the student’s year level and English ability, academic expectations may be adjusted. The aim is to provide challenge without overwhelming the student. 

Students may be able to explore a range of subjects, which could include English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, Technologies, The Arts and other available electives. 

Subject availability will depend on year level, timetable, class capacity and program timing. 

Personal development 

Six months overseas can be life-changing. Students have time to experience the highs and challenges of living in another country, developing skills that are valuable far beyond the classroom.

Full-year study and boarding experience 

The One Year Study Abroad Program offers the most complete Scotch Oakburn international experience. 

Over one school year, students become part of the College community. They participate in academic learning, boarding life, co-curricular activities, outdoor education opportunities and the wider rhythm of school life across the year. 

This program is ideal for students seeking a significant international experience, or for families who may be considering future senior study in Australia.

Academic experience 

The one year program provides the strongest opportunity for academic development. 

Students are expected to attend classes, participate actively, complete learning tasks and work toward personal academic growth. Depending on year level and English capacity, students may participate in a broad range of subjects. 

For older students, subject selection and academic expectations should be carefully planned before arrival. Students considering future senior study, TCE, ATAR or university pathways may require a tailored conversation with the College. 

The program does not guarantee entry into future years or senior pathways. Future enrolment would be considered separately and subject to academic suitability, English progress, visa requirements, availability and College approval. 

Personal development 

A full school year overseas helps students build maturity and self-belief. Students learn how to manage routines, communicate across cultures, make decisions, seek help and contribute to a community.
