READERS CUP

During Terms 2 and 3, 20 Year 5 students committed to taking part in Readers’ Cup.

In teams of five, they studied five books in preparation for an extensive quiz  and selected one of these books on which to base a short creative presentation. They collaborating at break times, supported by Mrs Naomie O’Loughlin, Dr Marissa Saville, Mrs Georgia Gee and Mrs Natalie Reeves to work on their presentations.

At our intra-school event, students began by sharing their creative presentations. Thank you to our judges Mrs Pip Robinson, Mrs Rachel Buck and Mrs Simone Ralph for their time and expertise. With only half-a-point separating the creative performances, the pressure was on for the quiz. It was extremely close, with the winning team announced as The Chapter Champions, comprising of Qiuya Zhao, Sarah de Souza, Zachary Lim, Joey da Rocha Batalha and Akira Narayan.

This team continued to study and polish their performance ready to represent the College at the inaugural Independent Schools Primary Readers’ Cup Final, held on the evening of Wednesday 26 August at the Penquite Campus. Scotch Oakburn had a Year 6 and a Year 5 team competing against Launceston Church Grammar School. In addition, the team was required to study an extra book in just 10 days, as the regional final included an extra unknown creative challenge based on this book. A huge thank you to Ms Becca Biggs for stepping in to be a judge at the last minute for this final.

After an enjoyable evening of watching the competing school teams perform their creative presentations and answering an entirely new set of even harder quiz questions,  it was a very tight finish with only one point separating each of the top three teams. Chapter Champions was delighted to learn they placed third overall. Congratulations to all the students who took this this opportunity to challenge themselves.
