The opening of Scotch Oakburn College’s 140th Anniversary Exhibition at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston, provided a wonderful opportunity to pause, reflect and celebrate the people, stories and values that have shaped our College since 1886.

It was a privilege to welcome a wide range of guests to the official opening, including representatives from government, College Board members, Collegians, former and current staff, students, families and community members. Round Square has arrived in Sydney, with eight Scotch Oakburn students joining 1,200 students and teachers from 152 schools across 30 countries for the 2026 Round Square International Conference at Barker College. Under the theme Visions of the Future from an Ancient Land, the conference is bringing together young people from across the globe to explore leadership, culture, service and what it means to shape a better future.

Our Round Square Captains, Year 1–4 SRC representatives and Year 1 student Arthur Gordon demonstrated wonderful leadership in helping to coordinate our recent City Mission Appeal. They encouraged their peers and families to get involved, showing initiative, compassion and a strong commitment to serving our community.

This year’s Round Square Peace Gathering once again drew on the College’s affiliation with the Tamar Valley Peace Festival — a connection stretching back over a decade.

The Tamar Valley Peace Trust was founded in 2015 by a group of Launceston residents to encourage a more peaceful approach to resolving conflict, grounded in community, global, environmental and social perspectives. Term 3 has been an exciting and flavour-filled journey for students across our Chinese program, with each year level taking part in hands-on cultural experiences that brought language learning to life.

Year 6: A Delicious Chinese Dining Experience
As part of their Food Unit, our Year 6 students had the opportunity to visit Me Wah Chinese Restaurant and put their Chinese language skills into practice in a real-world setting. Students confidently greeted staff, read menus, and ordered their meals entirely in Chinese.

The Launceston Tournament – Junior Football (Soccer) weekend carnival was recently held at Faulkner Park. Teams from across Tasmania competed, with boys, girls and mixed open teams in age groups from U9 to U16 taking to the field. Students Clementine Gee (Year 8) and Victoria Allen (Year 8) volunteered at the canteen during the tournament. Alongside a small group of volunteers, they helped raise an impressive $2,821 for people affected by flooding in Nepal through the Emergency Action Alliance.

Twenty-six students from Years 7 to 12 travelled to Elizabeth College in Hobart to participate in the annual Tasmanian Chinese Speaking Competition. Exchange Diaries: Charlie Will in Germany

During my time so far at Salem, I’ve noticed just how different school life is here compared to Scotch Oakburn. Every morning you wake up at 6:40 am for a quick run, then attend compulsory breakfast, which is a great way to get to know your fellow students. Classes begin at 8:00 am and end at 4:00 pm, with four classes a day rather than our three doubles, split by 30-minute breaks and a 40-minute lunch in the dining hall.
